Best Performance Sedan 2010
Shopping for a used sports sedan? These 5 should be on your list
These second-hand used sedans are great for the first-time buyer
If you're scouring the market for a second-hand luxury sports sedan, you'll quickly find a nearly daunting level of selection, and options to suit virtually any whim.
There are various reasons shoppers choose the car they choose. Some want the most face-peeling acceleration for their dollar . Others want the best fuel mileage . Others still gravitate towards certain models or brands because of specific looks , features , or even colours.
If you're entering the used luxury sport sedan scene for the first time, there's another attribute of huge importance that's likely at or near the top of your list: reliability. If that's front-and-centre in your search for a new-to-you sedan that's upscale, well-optioned, and exciting to drive, here are a few models I'd suggest checking out. Each of the following machines blend reasonable asking prices with a high likelihood of trouble-free operation, provided you take a few steps to confirm the health of the vehicle, before you buy.

2014-2015 Infiniti Q50
The Q50 replaced Infiniti's popular G37 range — itself powered by one of the most time-tested drivelines in the luxury scene. Specifically, we're talking about Infiniti's award-winning 3.7-litre V6 engine.
A free-breathing unit that loves to rev, this engine — and the driveline mated to it — had been in production for nearly a decade by time the Q50 rolled around. And when it did, that time-tested driveline carried over for the first two years. Translation? A 2014 or 2015 Q50 benefits from the latest Infiniti styling and tech, but uses a driveline that many owners says hasn't cause them any stress. In my research, I found few reports of the wiring and sensor glitches that tend to be reported as luxury cars age, too.
Still, have any used model you're considering inspected fully by a dealer technician before you buy, for maximum peace of mind. Some owners have reported various leaks and some infotainment-related trouble, particularly in 2014 model year units. Mechanical and electronic problems should be easy for a trained professional to spot during a pre-purchase inspection . Note that proper maintenance by all past owners is vital to the long-term health of any used vehicle, so check all the service records, too.
Once everything checks out, you're on your way to ownership of a high-performing sedan that's comfortable, easy to drive, and excellent in the snow. The V6 engine is a treat to work hard, and one of the last of its kind.
2013-2018 Cadillac ATS
The Cadillac ATS is a lovely driving machine — and in the right configuration, it should easily satisfy even the most demanding enthusiasts.
I'd recommend the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It seems a safer bet than the available V6 and generates more torque, too. Some models can be fitted with a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, though many used units will be automatic with all-wheel-drive. That's designated by a '4' in the badge on the trunk: the ATS is rear-wheel drive, the ATS4 is AWD.
With weight balance at 50/50 and an available high-performance chassis with Magnetic Ride Control shocks, the ATS' quick steering and very tidy handling make this one a discreet bit of driving fun. There's even a high-performance cooling system and mechanical limited-slip differential, on sportier variants.
For maximum peace of mind, check the low-profile tires for signs of damage and inspecting the edges of the wheels, too. Idle the engine and toggle the A/C on and off. If the engine struggles to run, one or more software updates may need to be applied to fix the issue. You'll also want to have the battery tested (and replaced, if advised) to avoid possible electronic issues.
Provided the unit you're considering has been well maintained and never modified with non-factory engine software or parts, the ATS is a solid performer with sharp reflexes that shouldn't cause you any stress.
2015 Jaguar XF
With a supercharged V6 engine and excellent AWD system, the Jaguar XF is a hell of a thing to drive in the snow and a pleasing performer in fairer weather, too.
Packed with high-end features and lined in some of the best leather in the business, this era of XF is a comfortable cruiser that works well for touring, as well as in the hands of a sportier driver with a heavier foot. A powerful lighting system and an electric front windshield defroster are other winter-busting features you'll find here.
After eight years in production, the 2015 XF sees owners report few alarming issues to be concerned with, providing shoppers take steps to ensure the used XF they're considering has been properly and consistently cared for throughout its life, and providing they have the vehicle inspected by a professional as a last step before purchasing.
A few owners report climate control issues, often caused by a plugged cabin air filter neglected by a past owner. The XF's factory battery can also be fussy if you don't drive the car regularly, so consider replacing it or using a trickle charger when you'll be parking it for more than a few days. As well, hard shifting from the transmission usually indicates the need for a software update, but have the transmission cleared by professional before you buy, if you note any trouble. Finally, keep an eye out for excessive seat wear and engine modifications that could void warranty coverage and cause headaches.
A healthy second-hand Jaguar XF can be had for reasonable money, giving owners a luxurious and exciting drive with power to spare in any weather condition.
2014+ Lexus IS 350
Sportier drivers will love the 3.5-litre V6 engine that powered many versions of this generation Lexus IS. This luxury sedan fits drivers like a glove, flaunts a gorgeous cabin, and comes with loads of safety tech. With over 300 horsepower on offer combined with AWD, it's ready to hustle in any weather, too.
The IS 350 was available with several trim grades and options that dialed in extra equipment, including athletic visuals and sporty add-ons with the F-Sport package. Owners say the IS 350 is nicely balanced between touring and sports car, praising the sound and feel of the V6 under the hood. That's one key reason to check out the IS 350: Lexus has built countless copies of this engine over the years, and it's the heart of a driveline that appears solid as can be in terms of reliability — providing it's been properly serviced and cared for.
Common issues reported by owners tend to be more electronic in nature, many of which may be caused by a weak or dying battery, or fixed with a software update. Check the central display system, wipers, battery and charging system, and all on-board electronics for proper operation. Carefully check all door openings for signs of rust, too — especially around the lower rocker panel area in the rear door opening.
Lexus has strong ratings from industry experts for reliability, though poor maintenance and care by past owners can cause problems or void remaining warranty coverage. That's why you should always have a used vehicle inspected by a professional before you buy, regardless of the badge on the hood.
If everything checks out, a second-hand Lexus IS should turn in a pleasing luxury sport driving experience you'll enjoy for years.
2015-2020 Acura TLX
Acura's TLX hit the scene for the 2015 model year, offering up several powertrain and trim options catering to a wide range of tastes and budgets.
The available four-cylinder engine was peppy and loved to work, while the V6 engine served up even more pulling power and refinement. Four-cylinder models got front-wheel-drive and all-wheel steering, while V6-powered units came with AWD. Though the TLX leaned towards the comfortable side of the ride and handling spectrum, it was unbothered by spirited driving, which both powerplants sound like they enjoy, too.
The TLX takes Acura's strong reputation for reliability into the second-hand market, making it a second-hand luxury sedan with a strong sporty side that won't break the bank in the long term.
Before you buy, ensure all applicable software updates have been applied, and be sure to test the parking brake several times on a steep hill, confirming that it holds the car in place. If that's not the case, the vehicle will need some repair or adjustment before passing a safety inspection. Other owner-reported complaints seem minor and infrequent, usually centering around potentially-wonky backup cameras and touchscreen interfaces. Try both several times on your test drive, to be safe.
With V6 power, the TLX is a comfortable cruiser with muscle to spare. With four-cylinder power, you'll experience quicker steering response in the corners and the mechanical charm of a snarling VTEC four-cylinder engine with plenty of oomph. Keep it healthy with regular maintenance and servicing, and a second-hand TLX should serve you well for the long haul.
